Marsellas Williams became the Economic Development Director for the city of Powder Springs in January of 2022. He is in charge of business recruitment and retention and redevelopment projects for the city. Prior to coming Powder Springs, he was an economic development project manager for Cobb County Government, where he worked for four years.

Powder Springs is growing at a tremendous pace and is one of the fastest growing cities in Cobb County with close to 16,000 residents. From 2013 – 2018 the available housing units in Powder Springs grew by 11.5%, compared to 3.5% growth in housing units for Cobb County, 3.6% for the State of Georgia, and 3.3% for the nation. Powder Springs is a place where people want to live and locate businesses and represents an increasingly significant consumer base.

William Tanks started a dual career with the Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services(CCFES) and the United States Navy Reserves in July of 1991. While in the Navy he served in the field of advanced logistics. He was mobilized to the Persian Gulf in 2003 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle. He retired from the USNR in 2006 as a Chief Petty Officer.

William worked in various positions throughout his fire career. He served as a firefighter, paramedic, engineer, lieutenant, captain and chief officer during his 26 years with CCFES. His career reflects many notable achievements and contributions as a fire service leader.  He is most proud of his role in the founding of the Metro Atlanta Firefighter’s conference in 2010. He is an original member of the Courageous Conversations team that has taught the class around the country for the past 10 years. He retired from the Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services in 2017 as a Deputy Fire Chief of Operations with 15 battalion and division chiefs as direct reports.

After spending six months in retirement, William came out of retirement and was appointed to Director of Public Services Agency for Cobb County Government. As Director of Public Services, William Directs the department heads of the 6 agencies that make up Public Services. Public Services is comprised of the Senior Services Department, Library Department, Elections Department, Extension Department, the Department of Sustainability, Waste & Beautification, and the Parks Department.

William holds an Associates Degree in Fire Science from Chattahoochee Technical College, a Bachelor of Business Management from Morris Brown College, a Master of Professional Accountancy from Georgia State University and a MBA from Kennesaw State University. He is the father of three adult children, has 4 grandchildren, and one stepson through his marriage to Lee Ann Tanks. His passion is leadership, management, and education.
