Michael Harris
Tax Commissioner
Henry County

Michael Harris was appointed to the position of Henry County Tax Commissioner on May 15, 2019. No stranger to Henry County Government, Michael began his tenure with Henry County in 1998 as a Civil Engineer in the County's Building Department. The following year, the County created the Development Plan Review department to handle the heavy influx of new development requests, Michael was selected to serve as the Director of this newly created department.

Michael later went on to become the Public Works Director, overseeing the counties transportation department and SPLOST program. As the County continued to grow and leadership sought to restructure organizational operations, Michael was promoted to the role of Division Director, overseeing numerous departments including Planning and Zoning, Building, GIS, Transit, Senior Services and Parks and Recreation. In this capacity, Michael also served as the liaison between County operations and some of the constitutional officers, including Tax Commissioner's office.

After a brief stint as the interim County Manager, Michael was hired by the City of Stockbridge to serve as their City Manager. During his three year tenure in Stockbridge, Michael and his team were able to restore the City's financial position by increasing their fund balance from 6% to over 20%.

In 2017, Michael left the City of Stockbridge to return to the private sector working for Jacobs Engineering. As a project manager, Michael was tasked with setting up the entire operational structure for the newly created City of Stonecrest, Georgia. Michael was appointed by the City Council to serve as the City's first City Manager during the City's first two years of existence.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University, as well as completion of the Senior Executive program at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, and is a 2010 graduate of Leadership Georgia.

As a 25-year resident of Henry County, Michael has been active in variety of local organizations including volunteering with Meals On Wheels, coaching youth sports, leading a local Boys Scout troop, and serving as a volunteer tutor at a local middle school.

After raising their two children, Sierra and Myles, Michael and his wife Angela reside in the Hampton area where they continue to enjoy life as "Empty Nesters".
