Commissioner, District 6
DeKalb County
In 2020, Commissioner Terry was elected to serve as the Super District 6 Commissioner of DeKalb County. His district includes half of the County with portions of South, Central and North DeKalb, totaling approximately 350,000 residents.
Committed to his platform, Commissioner Terry’s motto of “Together, We Can Move DeKalb Forward,” focuses on affordable housing, transit equity, DeKalb Green New Deal, DeKalb voting rights, and criminal justice reform.
After being elected, Commissioner Terry was appointed to serve as Chair of the Operations (OPS) Committee and as a member of the Public Works and Infrastructure (PWI) Committee. Commissioner Terry also sponsored the creation of the Green Policy Committee and the DeKalb Community Election Committee.
In addition to his other service, he currently serves on the DeKalb Community Service Board and as the First Vice-Chair for the Democratic Party of Georgia, on the advisory board for the Global Village Project and as a member of the DeKalb Community Service Board (CSB), DeKalb County’s community-based behavioral health and developmental disabilities services organization, Board of Directors. Commissioner Terry also serves as a member of the Resilience Advisory Board and Large Urban County Caucus with the National Association of County Officials (NACo).
Prior to his election, Commissioner Terry served as the Mayor of the most ethnically diverse square mile in America: Clarkston, Georgia from January 2014 – March 2020, where he was the youngest Mayor in Clarkston’s 135-year history.
As mayor of Clarkston, Commissioner Terry successfully oversaw the implementation of a bold, progressive agenda including a $15 minimum wage for city employees, the decriminalization of simple marijuana possession, an expansion of after-school programs, and a commitment for Clarkston to utilize 100 percent clean energy by 2050. He also represented Clarkston at a United Nations meeting on refugee resettlement and at the German Marshall Fund’s Young Policy Network Conference on Migration.
With more than 17 years of experience in public service, his broad-minded leadership style helped transition Clarkston’s vision to become a more welcoming and compassionate community. While serving as the Mayor of Clarkston, Commissioner Terry worked as the Campaign Director for the Georgia AFL-CIO and later as the Director of the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club.
